As per the Semi-final allocation draw held on January 31, 2023, Ukraine and the Big-5 countries, namely Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, have secured their place in the Grand Final on May 13, 2023, without having to compete in the Semi-finals.

The remaining participating countries have been divided into two Semi-finals, scheduled to take place on May 9 and 11, 2023, respectively. Each Semi-final will have 10 countries competing, with the top 10 from each Semi-final advancing to the Grand Final. This means that a total of 26 countries will be competing in the Grand Final - 10 from Semi-final 1, 10 from Semi-final 2, and the Big-5 and Ukraine.

Howdy slick. Slightly uninspired this year as the song standard is really poor (*insert obvious joke about them always being poor here*) so not been so immersed in it, but will post something pre-final.

The semi final tonight is public vote only (change from last year) so no juries.

Only pre-semi final 1 tip is I that I think Czech Republic is underrated and will do well once seen on stage. 2.50 widely available for the top 10.

Also Slovenia top Balkan @ 2.38 worth a look. Only really has Serbia to beat here which is quite messy and not picking up any traction (outside chance of it going out tonight, but unlikely.)

Little to pick between a lot of the songs at the lower end, but my ranking in terms of Q chances below.

Notice we have another strong favourite in Sweden, is it a dead cert or some value to be had going against it? I'm def not backing it to win at that price no matter how good a song it is.

I think it's more a reflection of the overall weakness of the competition - it's a fairly polished entry - nothing new or novel but ticks a lot of Eurovision boxes in terms of presentation, song build, performance - that should do very well with juries. Televote is less certain as there aren't too many USPs, but in a weak year a strong jury score and top 5-10 televote score may be enough.

One of it's problems may be that if commentators present the song as an extremely heavy favourite, the less motivated viewers are to vote for it - like when Simon Cowell used to (deliberately!) say on the Xfactor "You are sailing through to the next round", it's message to the audience is "you dont need to vote for this as it will win/go through anyway."

We will get the running order late tonight (I think) which may give some clues in terms of how songs performed in the semis, so I'll add some thoughts on the final tomorrow morning.

Oh tell a lie, I work with a Finnish fella who insisted I watch their act on youtube, it looked like a crock of shit to me with some pot bellied bloke wearing....well I don't know what he was wearing but it looked like he had lost a bet.
It wasn't for me but by all accounts it was popular apparently, If that's the standard then tomorrow night is gonna be a long one.

Silly to try and predict every song and it will look very wrong on Sunday, but current thoughts:

Win:

Sweden - Likely tops the jury vote, and online buzz/chart stats suggest its going to be top 5 televote also, which is likely to be enough. Price looks too short though.

Top 5 - no particular order:

Finland - may win televote, but hamstrung by juries
Israel - Great starting slot, strong televote, another one that will be limited by juries
Italy - surprisingly good twitter response during the live show on Tuesday. Not rated by the market, but coming after Albania is a good draw and the performance is engaging - juries usually give Italy a strong boost and this is jury bait. Top 5 @ 2/1, top 4 @ 5/1, or each way at anything 60/1+ might land the place money
Spain - another jury bait song that did well in online reaction midweek. Similar to italy - odds are lower but top 5 @ 2/1 not out of the question.

6-10 - no particular order:

Austria
Portugal - Surprised by this progressing in the televote only semi. Running order is terrible, but top 15 @ 4/1 looks too big.
Slovenia - Indicators that it did well in semi, and good running order slot. May sneak top 10 @ 3/1+. Top Balkan odds still look ok, but Croatia televote does pose some thread.
Norway
Armenia

11-15 - no particular order:

Ukraine - very difficult to guess the televote this will get, and now a big diaspora throughout Europe, but not sensing anywhere near the same buzz as last year. Can get 3/1 on them not making top 10.
Czech Republic - Running order slot is poor, and suggests may not have done so well in the semi. Reducing confidence in this, and top 10 no longer looks particularly appealing.
France - lots of buzz but twitter/facebook/instagram reaction was dead on Tuesday. Jury vote may save it. 2/1 to miss top 10 worth a look.
Belgium
Croatia

16-20 - no particular order:

Poland
Albania
Australia
Moldova
Estonia - should get a decent jury score. Think it may beat Lithuania at odds against.

21-25 - no particular order:

Serbia
Cyprus - Evens for it to miss top 15. Dont think juries will go for this.
Lithuania
Germany
Switzerland

Last Place:

UK - think it could be us again. 5/1 on this. Online metrics are terrible, and rehearsal vocals not good. difficult to see where the points come from (but this is a very volatile market - one random 12 points can lift any song well away from the bottom.)

Limits are a big problem for me today. I tried to back Lithuania last place @ 21.0 bet 365 and got max stake £1. Also Slovenia to make the top 5 @ 23.0 skybet was max £2 for me. Ridiculous.

Yeah it's grim for the most part. Bookies got hammered on the smaller Eurovision markets during the 2010s because the only people betting on them were typically the Eurovision betting community who knew a lot more than the odds setters. Add personal limits on top and as you say its pennies.

The worst ones are when youve found a great price and they send them off to a trader for review. "We cant offer you £100 @ 8/1. Do you wish to accept £6.67 @ 5/1". Need to give a live chat option on those so that you can tell the trader to fuck off.

BetUK are allowing me 54p on Portugal top 10 8/1. I can rebet it after 15 mins have passed. Come back to me next week when im up to a fiver on.
 
AUSTRIA: Teya & Salena - Who The Hell Is Edgar?

Not too bad, has a touch of the cheeky girls about it.
first one I've listened to and I like it, It's a shame its first up and could diminish as the show goes on.
Even though it's the first one I've listened to, I'm putting it down as top 10 material, if need be I'll narrow it down further when I've listened to them all.
I'm presuming the song is going to be sung in English.

PORTUGAL: Mimicat - Ai Coração

This isn't so bad either, sounds more French than portugese.
I could russian dance to this lol, very lively and energetic, like something out of a musical.
Another I'm shortlisting , I've just spotted it's 7's for a top 10 finish, I'll have some of that.

SWITZERLAND: Remo Forrer - Watergun

Not so sure about this, The intro was ok but now the song has started the lyrics sound a bit naff, I don't think singing the song in English is doing it any favours. If I didn't know what he was singing about I might have liked it.

POLAND: Blanka - Solo

Another catchy number, nah it's getting a bit repetitive now and the vocals aren't really being tested, she's becoming a bit monotonous.
I think she could have done better with a bit more effort, C+ from me. I won't be going back to this one.

SERBIA: Luke Black - Samo Mi Se Spava

The quality's tapering off now, this song is rather confusing, I couldn't tell you what genre it is, it moves from ballad to pop to rock to opera , It could have been a lot better if Lukes voice was stronger and louder, maybe it's something they could tweak on the night.
Either way it's not going in my top 10.

FRANCE: La Zarra - Évidemment

Typical French sounding song here and nice vocals, in recent years these get tipped to do well but sadly fail.
Maybe this year could be different as La Zarra certainly sets a French vibe and sounds the part.
I like this a lot and it's going on my shortlist.

CYPRUS: Andrew Lambrou - Break A Broken Heart

This songs reminds me of something but I can't think what, it's definitely ripping another song off.
Nah, I've heard enough of this and turned it off half way through, it's got nothing going for it.
Worst one yet.


SPAIN: Blanca Paloma - EAEA

This is a bit different, the Intro sounds like a call to prayers at the local mosque.
Now it's going downhill and sounding like a nursery rhyme, this started with loads of potential but imo it's been sadly wasted,
Sorry this isn't for me although it may well hit top 10 as it does sound very diverse.


SWEDEN: Loreen - Tattoo

Loreen has a bit of the Kate Bushes about her, sounds nothing like her mind but she does possess a very strong voice, just a pity the song isn't as strong.
This will do well due to the performance of Loreen and the visuals, It should reach top 10 but i think the song is to weak to see it over the winning line.
 
I see that last one is the favourite and I'm suggesting it might just hit top 10:lol

That's why I like hitting these blind and then compare my views with the experts to see if I need my ears cleaning out or not:lol
 
Saying that, this is 'The Eurovision song contest' and not 'the Voice', if it was she'd be my favourite so far.
 
ALBANIA: Albina & Familja Kelmendi - Duje


Has a similar intro to the Spanish song, the acoustics sound a bit tinny but it's not to bad a song.
It's never going to win but as I'm now looking at the betting I don't think it'll finish last either.


ITALY: Marco Mengoni - Due Vite


This is good, has a nice Italian vibe about and like the French song easily identifiable, Whic is what the Eurovision should be all about.
I'm shortlisting this and putting it in my top five.

ESTONIA: Alika - Bridges


Ahh a Ballad, there doesn't seem as many this year as previous years.
This is very middle of the road. Could finish top 15 but will struggle to reach top 10 imo.
 
FINLAND: Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha

This is garbage and the sort of song i slag off every year but comes back to bite me on the arse.
It's by far the worst I've heard so far and how It's anywhere near being favourite I'll never know.

CZECHIA: Vesna - My Sister's Crown


This ain't so bad, I'm watching the first semi final vid and the acoustics sound very hollow.
It's becoming rather bland the longer it goes on, it doesn't really gather any momentum or tempo , just droning on and on, not for me,

AUSTRALIA: Voyager - Promise

This could do well, Europeans tend to like a bit of rock and guitar, it's not a great song but there's enough going on visually to keep the viewer interested all the way through the song.
I'd shortlist this in my top 10 @ 4's and I'd go for the song to better that But because of European bias as the UK has found out itself to it's own detriment in recent years, Australia will probably do well to finish in the top 20.
 
BELGIUM: Gustaph - Because Of You


The Intro has got me, I like this, could have potential.
Tapering off now, starting to sound like poor mans M People, now watching the video and see it's a boy george lookalike, that could work in this diverse age.
even so it was catchy throughout, I'll add it to my top 10 list


ARMENIA: Brunette - Future Lover

This is nice and tranquil, and then like so many tonight it doesn't pack any ooomph and fades away.
This doesn't do anything for me,

MOLDOVA: Pasha Parfeni - Soarele şi Luna


Is this really a song? it's more like an intro to a magic act,
Just as i was about to write it off it's started to pick up, has a Turkish sound to it now,
Not half as bad as it started off, not a winner but I can see it doing better than it's odds suggest.
Top 15 imo.
